Single Malts are emerging out of so many countries these days that it comes as no surprise that India is the latest big whisky market to start producing some high-quality spirit of their own.
The Paul John distillery is located in Goa, the popular beach resort in the south-west of the country. It is named after the company chairman and has been a big player in the domestic molasses whisky market for some time.
It is now also distilling for international markets too and the Brilliance is a single malt that does a decent job of living up to its name.
The heat and humidity here means they lose a lot to evaporation but the trade-off is their whisky matures much faster than in colder climates.
Their Brilliance single malt has been made using Indian 6-row barley from the Himalayan foothills and aged in bourbon barrels for between 3 and 5 years, but it has the complexity of flavour of a far older whisky.
There is a lot of sweetness in the mix here but hints of herbs and spices add a depth of flavor that will have you reaching for your glass again and again.
