Founded in 1985, the Japanese distillery Shinshu Mars is located at Miyada, a village in Nagano, Japan. It is found around 800 metres above sea level making it Japan's highest whisky distillery. The location was chosen firstly because of its high-quality water source and secondly, because of the more moderate levels of humidity which inevitably prolongs maturation.
The most notable product which has come out of the distillery is Komagatake, a single malt whisky which honours the cherry blossom in Japan. It is a lightly peated expression and is matured in ex-wine casks used for producing Japanese wine.
