Once America's most popular whiskey style, Rye has enjoyed a revival (ryevival? anyone?) and is now back where it belongs, in the glasses of drinkers around the world.
Rye whiskey is different to Bourbon or single malt, in that it uses the spicy rye grain – the same stuff we grind to make our bread – as its base! Largely matured in new American oak barrels, it can be considered a spiritual sibling to Bourbon.
Originally made in Pennsylvania, the spirit's post-Prohibition power-centre is undoubtedly Kentucky. It is also the whiskey most closely associated with the Golden Age of cocktails, with many classic libations using rye as their base spirit, such as the Manhattan, the Sazerac and the Old Fashioned.
