This is a dram with a fascinating backstory. Legend has it that when the distillery was expanding in 1975, workmen found a time capsule that contained a bottle of whisky wrapped in a newspaper detailing a fire at the distillery back in 1898. A rare find indeed - single malt bottlings were largely unheard of in this era, with most spirit ear-marked for blends.
After polishing off much of the whisky during their lunch break, the tradies sent the remainder off to the lab for analysis. After examining the spirit, Aberlour attempted to recreate it on a commercial scale, with A’Bunadh the result. The bottling references this intriguing history with its name, which translates from the Scots Gaelic as “The Original”.
“Boona”, as it is affectionately known, is now one of Aberlour’s most long-standing and highly regarded expressions. Though this whisky features no age statement, it is rumoured to contain whisky as old as 25 years.

Sweet, warming malt aromas are accompanied by dark oak, toasted walnuts, and stewed plums in red wine. With time a cherry cola note emerges, backed by some earthy liquorice.
Intense baking spices of cloves and cinnamon immediately assert themselves. The spice subsides to reveal beautiful flavours of prunes, brown sugar, espresso, chocolate covered nuts and cherries.
Extremely long with lingering black pepper, bitter orange rind, more liquorice and some subtle vanilla. A powerful, near-perfect Sherried dram.
