Details
One of the originals, Balblair has a history stretching all the way back to 1790! Illicit distilling may have been occurring at the side even earlier. Found in the Northern Highlands, Balblair is surrounded by mountains, and located in a valley full of peat.
These days, the whisky isn’t noticeably peaty, with a precise, citrus sharpness and rich fruitiness typical of a Balblair dram. This 12 year old is a well crafted offering that would serve well as an introduction to Scottish whisky, or as a good reliable daily dram for the more seasoned drinker.

Tasting notes
Nose
At first: heaps of fresh citrus zest, a hallmark of Balblair. Next up is a burst of intense spiciness, with black pepper, cinnamon and nutmeg. A little oak and sandalwood round things out.
Taste
Orchard fruits come to the party in the shape of freshly sliced red apple. Honeyed malt, fresh pastry and charred oak grace a thick mouthfeel.
Finish
Shortish finish with plenty of tea tannins and oak. A great introduction to this impressive distillery.
