A 100% rye whisky from one of Tasmania’s most interesting distillers. Belgrove was the first rye distillery in Australia, and continues to set the standard. Whisky made here is “grain to glass”, with the maverick distiller, Peter Bignell, overseeing the entire process. This sweet and spicy drop is a Whisky Loot exclusive vatting of cask strength rye whisky, matured in ex-Single Malt and Pinot Noir casks.
Belgrove is a fascinating distillery.
The work of one man, Peter Bignell, Belgrove is the only biofuel powered distillery in the world. Bignell uses repurposed cooking-oil to directly fire his stills – a practice very rarely found these days. Water is sourced from rainful on his farmland (purified before use) and rye is grown onsite. Cooling water is sourced from Bignell's own dam, and any waste water is used for irrigation.
There can be little doubt that this is one of the most sustainable distilleries in the world, if not sitting pretty in the top spot! Bignell's painstaking efforts are not in vain – he makes one of the most characterful and delicious whiskies in Australia. His whisky and white spirit is 100% rye grain, which is notoriously difficult to work with.
This vatting is exclusive to Whisky Loot, and offers a powerful taste of what Belgrove are all about.

Instantly intriguing, with a subtle, succulent vegetal note, alongside dried apricots, rye spices (white pepper and nutmeg), oats, and damp oak aromas of the distillery warehouse.
Full bodied, earthy and rich, with flavours of polished oak and leather giving way to reveal sweet marmalade, sugared rye and delicious dried fruits.
A woody, drying finish with a medium length. Lingering notes of tannic oak and rosemary stem are joined by peppery rye spices.
