Found about five hours’ drive from Sydney, Blackgate Distillery is a family affair, operated by Brian and Genise Hollingworth.
The Hollingworths learnt their trade before leaping into the whisky business, spending time in Scotland, Ireland and other parts of Australia researching distillation. The distillery itself was a bit of a community project, with friends and family helping to raise the shed and stills that make up Blackgate Distillery.
During the summer, Genise makes full-bodied pot still rum at Blackgate, whilst the winter sees Brian distill delightful single malt.
This dram is an excellent example of the distillery’s spirit – the product of three casks, numbers BG040, BG048 and BG049 which were originally distilled between December 2015 and April 2016!

Rich aromas of stewed pears, plums and oily walnuts come through first, soon joined by caramel sauce, vanilla, green apples and wet Apera oak. An intense and inviting nose.
A little spicier on the palate, which is rather full, with flavours of black pepper, oak and cinnamon tempered by sweet dates, prunes, plums, burnt brown sugar and toasted nuts.
Long, lingering and spicy, with more black pepper and oak-spice mingling with dried fruits, candied orange zest, treacle tart and toasted malt long after the spirit has passed.
