A highly traditional distillery, found a little outside one of Speyside’s premier whisky-towns, Aberlour.
Glenfarclas is one of the last distilleries in Scotland to maintain “direct fired” stills – meaning, stills that are heated with naked flame, much like a pot on a gas stove. It’s the distillery’s belief that this produces a weightier spirit, with “hot spots” in the still producing this effect.
Glenfarclas also has something of a micro-climate, leading to extremely low losses through evaporation, allowing the distillery to age whisky for greater periods of time. In turn, this means there is a plentiful supply of well-aged ‘Farclas on the market.
This is an excellent example of the distillery’s style, with all the classic flavours you would expect from the Speyside giant.

A wave of caramelised orange and tangerine rind aromas at first, followed by glacé cherries, pecans, plum jam and raspberries. Light, fragrant oak emerges given time.
Lighter than you might expect from a dram of this age, with flavours of stewed plums with cinnamon, anise and nutmeg, followed by the same citrus peel notes of the nose.
The age comes through here, as does the malt, with a long, lush finish delivering flavours of malted bread, drying oak, leather and soft spice.
