A fascinating whisky release from the Kaiyo Japanese Whisky company. This dram has been “teaspooned” – a practice quite common in Scotch whisky – where a small amount of another malt whisky is added to a single malt. This means it is technically a blended malt whisky, but with the flavour profile of a single malt. The spirit has also been matured in Japanese Mizunara oak – the most expensive cask variety in the world, and one of the most difficult to manage.

Tasting notes

Nose

Very fragrant, with subtle aromas of oiled sandalwood, waxy orange rind, green tea leaves, vanilla pods and coconut flakes.

Taste

Full bodied and rich, with flavours of polished oak, light tobacco leaf, fresh pastry, more coconut, gentle sea spray, almonds, vanilla, toasted marshmallows and walnuts.

Finish

Spicy and long, with cracked red and black peppercorns, cinnamon, drying oak, ripe bananas and a subtle savoury malt note.
