A well-aged offering from one of Scotland’s under-the-radar cult malts. Famed for being a “distillers’ favourite”, this whisky has long provided an important part of the Chivas blends. This expression, matured in three types of cask, is well balanced and full bodied, having been bottled without chill-filtration (meaning all the delicious flavours are in the bottle, not the filter).

Found just outside the whisky-town of Elgin, Longmorn is famed for the quality of its sweet, fragrant and fruity spirit – often featuring as a crucial ingredient in blends. 

This 16 year old offering was released in 2017, to re-establish the whisky as a premium single malt, an ambition it has definitely achieved. Matured largely in former Bourbon barrels, it showcases Longmorn spirit at perfect maturity, with the spirit’s natural qualities balanced flawlessly against the oak influence. A characterful and delicious Speyside single malt.  

The bottle design reflects the decadence of the whisky – featuring a distinctive leather binding around its foot.

Tasting notes

Nose

Like striding into the distillery warehouse: soft, dusty oak and earthy spice aromas envelope the drinker, followed by toasted malt, vanilla and dried peaches.

Taste

Here a distinctive waxy citrus flavour comes through – giving the impression of marmalade on toast, joined by more dried fruit, cereal sweetness and drying oak.

Finish

Medium-length, with lingering flavours of concentrated malt sweetness, waxy orange rind, slightly tannic oak and creamy nutmeg.

Warmth and flavor

Love the feel in my mouth. Smooth and tastes almost thick with vanilla and fruit not quite sweet but very easy in the mouth.

Very enjoyable first taste of the Advanced box after finishing all the Explorer tastings.
