$140.00

Another Limited Edition for another of Europes most awarded distillers. Puni's Nero expression has been aged for 3 years in Italian Pinot Nero (Similar to Pinot Noir) casks. While seemingly young, the intense casks and warm climate create a whisky which is beyond its age in complexity. Starting in 2012, Puni is easily the youngest distillery we've ever featured.

our tasting notes

Nose

Wine is immediately obvious. Fruity on the nose with red currant, raspberries and bramble. Backed up with flavours reminiscent of a fruit and nut bar.

Taste

Sweet and smooth with vanilla, plums and dates. Spices then kick in with oak, black pepper, ginger, and aniseed. Becomes slightly dry towards the finish.

Finish

The finish is long and smooth with creamy vanilla, caramel and bitter orange. It may sound redundant, but it tastes very Italian.

about

Puni is located near the Ortler mountain range in the Alps, northern Italy. Their barley is sourced from Austria while the wheat and rye in their mash bill is grown locally. Truly the definition of small batch production, the distiller proudly utilises their wine heavy surroundings when ageing their spirits.

Italian malt whisky from Puni (whose distillery is housed inside a frankly awesome 13 metre red brick cube!) is unlike other malt whiskies, barley isn't the only cereal used here, however, as malted rye and malted wheat are both also employed.

NICE

Quite a good job done here for a 3-year-old whisky.

OK

OK, only three years, and you can tell. But he's pretty decent for that, no obstetrician or sourdough, like other mainlanders, not sprightly, and I'm a gooseberry fanatic, he's got something interesting of his own. 50 € are somewhat steep for the pure enjoyment, but still quite fair in relation to other (often worse) exotics and baby distilleries. (And the bottle looks really good on the shelf, even though it looks strange on pictures.)

Definitely more than a work in progress.

This limited bottling of the young Italian distillery PUNI is a rich and full-bodied single malt with a convincing fruitiness and warming spiciness derived from thepinot noir casks. Although only three years of age, the rough edges of the new spirit are slightly present on the nose while this dram already shows good character and maturity on the palate.
