A remarkably old Kentucky Straight Rye, this bottling is the premium version of Buffalo Trace’s beloved “Baby Saz” bottling. This expression is made using the distillery’s rye mashbill, containing at least 51% rye grain. The whiskey has been aged for 18 years and 4 months in new American oak, with an astonishing 76.9% of spirit lost to evaporation.
One of the finest rye whiskies on the market, Sazerac 18 Year Old is named after the historic Sazerac Coffee House in New Orleans, acclaimed for being the home of “America’s First Cocktail” – the Sazerac.
The Sazerac was originally made with Cognac – American rye whiskey came to be used in the drink following the devastation wreaked upon French grape crops by the Phylloxera pest, which destroyed the supply of Cognac around the world.
Other ingredients were an absinthe rinse, sugar and Peychaud Bitters, a cocktail bitters created by Antoine Peychaud, a New Orleans resident. In 2008, the Sazerac was named the official cocktail of the State of Louisiana.
