Speyburn is one of the distilleries established in the boom of the late 19th century, when their construction was rushed so that the first barrels of whisky would bear the date 1897 – the year of Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee. They just managed to achieve this ambition, with the first whisky flowing on 15th December.
The stillmen worked amidst a raging snowstorm, in coats and gloves, and only one butt was filled. Nevertheless, the owners achieved their ambition, and Speyburn was off to a successful start.
These days, the whisky is one of the top ten best-selling Scotch single malts, prized as a terrific value for money drop. This 10 year old expression is a wonderful introduction to this historic, and old fashioned whisky distillery.
