Old world meets new world with red wine barrel matured spirit finished for a period in former Islay whisky casks. Rich, juicy and slightly smokey all at the same time.
Starward Distillery are all about celebrating great Australian produce – using 100% Aussie barley and Australian red wine barrels for their whiskies. So when it came to creating their uniquely Aussie take on the smokey Islay style whisky it should come as no surprise that this dram is fully matured in Melbourne without a peat bog in sight.
Starward start with their signature red wine cask aged single malt, and then finish the spirit in whisky barrels that are sourced directly from some of Islay’s top distilleries. Rather than peat smoke the grains themselves, they have infused this flavour during maturation to create a rich marriage of ripe red berries and light coastal peat smoke. Completely unexpeated.

Red berries and tropical fruits collide with toasted oak and the faintest whiff of bonfire smoke. With a little time the smokiness builds, with a touch of salinity.
Full-bodied and exceptionally jammy red fruits come first - think strawberry and redcurrant jam on toast. Well balanced peat smoke comes next with hints of dark chocolate.
A long, drying finish with trailing hints of oak spices, tannic red wine and elegant smoke.
