By the time of his death in 1893, Thomas H. Handy had risen to become a prominent businessman in New Orleans – having totally rebuilt the Sazerac Coffee House, and seen off rivals who had laid claim to the bar, and the rights to Peychaud Bitters (an important ingredient in the Sazerac cocktail).
Indeed, the Thomas H. Handy Co., which at one point held the sole rights of import and ownership for the ingredients of the Sazerac cocktail, would later grow to become the Sazerac Company.
In 1992, this company purchased Buffalo Trace distillery, and later released this Thomas H. Handy rye whiskey, honouring their roots, as part of the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection.
A terrific rye whiskey – younger than the Sazerac 18, but no less delicious!

Floral rye aromas open up this nose, before scents of fruit punch, peppermint, charred oak, toffee and preserved cherries emerge.
A creamy mouthfeel brings brown sugar, nutmeg, cinnamon, strawberries and cream, more mint and grassy rye, a little vanilla and fresh American oak.
Medium in length, and offering more of those preserved cherries, alongside toffee, rye spice and liquorice. A terrific, fruitier style of rye whiskey!
