Once the most northerly distillery on the island of Great Britain, this mantle has now been claimed by industry new-boys, Wolfburn.
For many years, Pulteney distillery was accessible only by sea, with barley and coal coming in by boat, and whisky leaving the same way.
The coastal environment of the distillery is definitely detectable in the spirit itself, with the aging casks absorbing plenty of sea breeze.

A richly sherried nose, with aromas of clove studded orange rind, toffee, sultanas and walnuts. Vanilla-led Bourbon oak character comes with time, as does some salted popcorn.
Oily and rich. Plentiful sherry character here too – think chopped nuts in treacle with prunes and dried figs. Chocolate orange pops up, as does some salted caramel.
Long, with more chocolate orange, oak and cracked black pepper. A big step up from the 12 year old.
