John Distilleries have been on the go since 1992. The company is best known in its home country for producing “whiskies” that are something closer to rum - blended spirits with a molasses base.
Since 2012, however, they’ve been making terrific Indian Single malt under the Paul John name. This juice is created in a unique fashion to highlight the distinctive qualities that India’s environment brings to whisky. The “wash” (essentially the barley beer brewed before distillation) is only 5% ABV, lower than most Scottish distilleries, which Paul John believes produces a sweeter final product. The spirit is also barreled at a lower proof, as the climate actually increases the strength in the cask. Strength is certainly what this particular dram is all about!

A seriously powerful nose, rich in notes of honey drenched orchard fruits, vanilla, crushed flowers, cinnamon, cracked black pepper and fresh pastry. There’s a precise golden syrup note in there too.
Hefty spirit, packed with heaps of oily malt, dark chocolate covered orange slices, cinnamon sticks, vanilla bean, bright oak and the same honeyed apples of the nose.
Hot and long with spicy notes of cinnamon, cracked black pepper and drying vanilla oak. A really powerful whisky, but delicious given patience.
