our tasting notes

Nose

Clean and fruity. Pears, strawberry jam, and a little vanilla. The Speyside floral notes are there but sparing and contrasted by just a hint of the sweetness to come.

Taste

Light, smooth and sweet, packed with rich dried fruits and honey that come through even stronger with a dash of water. There is also a pleasant hint of spiciness from the oak casks that gives a marmalade tang on the tongue.

Finish

Long and sweet with the spice becoming a little stronger and contrasting nicely with a smooth and creamy finish.

about

SPEY Tenné is a special Speyside single malt. While it brings all the lightness and delicate flavours that are typical of whiskies from Scotland’s east coast, it is finished in port casks which brings a flavour and colour not common in Speyside scotch.

Tenné is the Latin word for Tawny and is given because while this whisky spends the bulk of its maturation time in bourbon casks, it is finished in Tawny Port casks for the last six months. While there is no age statement, Speyside Distillery has confirmed that all Tenné has been in the barrel for at least eight years.

That last six months is the making of this whisky. Not only does the port-soaked oak impact a rich ruby colour, it also brings a fruity sweetness that is both surprising and deeply satisfying.

Speyside suggest Tenné as a pre-dinner aperitif and the sweetness does lend itself to that. But the lightness makes it alarmingly easy to drink and for us it is a scotch that can be enjoyed at any time.
