A truly remarkable triple aged blended whisky from the Last Drop. In total, this whisky has been aged for no less than 45 years. The spirit was originally destined to be a 12 year old blend back in the 1980s, when it was first blended from 40 different 1971 vintage spirits. It then returned to eleven Oloroso sherry casks for 9 years, before being transferred to 9 American oak barrels for an extra 24 years!
The Last Drop are a spirits company unlike any other. Their story reads like something out of Indiana Jones: a crack team of distilling experts travel the world, searching for the very oldest and rarest stocks to bottle for their line of premium spirits. In over a decade of operation, the company have only bottled 13 expressions – such is their emphasis on rarity.
Originally the retirement project of James Espey and Tom Jago, two gents behind some of the biggest expressions in the business (think Johnnie Walker Blue Label, Bailey’s Irish Cream and Chivas Bros 18 Year Old), the Last Drop has since passed to their daughters, but the same high standards have been maintained, as this dram illustrates.
This 1971 vintage is ludicrously rich and decadent dram, packed with stewed fruits, caramelised citrus and vanilla. Comes beautifully presented with a handsome display case, and a 50ml sample, so you can enjoy this whisky without opening the precious full sized bottle.
