After a period of closure and refurbishment, Tobermory announced themselves back on the whisky scene with this delicious 12 year old single malt. Matured in first-fill American oak and former Bourbon casks, the dram showcases Tobermory’s signature oily and slightly coastal style. Bottled at 46.3% and without chill filtration, this is a full bodied unpeated island whisky.

One of the oldest distilleries in Scotland, a distillery has existed in one form or another at the Tobermory site since at least 1798.
Strangely shaped stills create the unique Tobermory style, with large balls in their necks (named “boil bulbs”) and crooked lyne arms (the pipe that connects stills to the condensers) ensuring a rich, oily character.
12 years of maturation close to the sea give this dram a coastal, salty edge.

Sharp orange rind, honeyed malt and gentle sea spray emerge initially, followed by apricot pastry, and some baked orchard fruit aromas.
A full, creamy mouthfeel delivers notes of dried stone fruit, salted caramel, sticky date pudding, more sea-salinity, and heaps of sweet malty character.
Quite long and warming, with the return of the nose’s citrus rind, toasted oak and some ground nutmeg.
