Due to its remote northerly location, and the lack of modern roads or rail, the town and distillery was accessible only by boat. At the time, it was said that barrels of silver (herrings) and barrels of gold (whisky) would both leave Wick.
These days, the herring trade isn’t quite as lucrative, but the whisky industry is booming. Old Pulteney is rightly recognised as one of the finer Highland drops.

Aromas of freshly baked chocolate cake is joined by orange rinds, figs in syrup, crunchy malt and salted butter on toast. Apples and oak build with time.
Rich flavours of chocolate ganache and dark cherries, with vanilla custard, dark oak, salted popcorn, very slight iodine and caramelised apples. A satisfyingly full mouthfeel.
Extremely long, with citrus rind, cinnamon and salt and pepper dancing on the palate.
